Commit to the bee
At Classic City Bee Company we are committed to the conservation of our embattled honeybee. These incredible creatures are the best pollinators we have and so much of our food depends on their continued growth and survival. We invite you to commit to the bee by finding ways you can help raise awareness of the plight of our pollinators. There are many ways you can get involved, but here are a few to help you get started.
1.
Consider supporting one of the following organizations either financially or with a donation of your time. There are also a number of other incredible organizations to support including some which may be local to you!
2.
Consider getting into beekeeping. Whether you only have room enough for one hive or a hundred, or even if you just want to get to know it more, there is a place for you in our community! It may seem daunting but there is a local beekeeper or club which would love to help.
3.
EAT MORE HONEY! We know this is self-serving but it really is an important step. The average American consumes roughly 152 lbs. of sugar a year. Conversely, we only consume about 1.5 lbs. of honey in the same time period. A higher demand for honey creates a higher demand for beekeepers, which leads to more colonies, and a financial incentive to keep them healthy. Try cutting back on added sugars and adding in honey if you need to sweeten your meals!
4.
Take care of the world around you. The best way to do this as it relates to honeybees is by planting pollinator-friendly plants and refusing to use harmful pesticides including neonicotinoids. Whether you only have a window box for flowers or a thousand acres, there is something you can do.
5.
Reach out to your representatives in the Senate and the House of Representatives. Let them know where you stand on preserving and growing the honeybee population. Tell them where you stand on neonicotinoid usage and how you would like them to vote when these issues arise. They represent you but we represent the bees.
